Edo state gubernatorial election has been declared freest and farest election in Nigeria due to timely intervention of the Nigerian Visiting Journalists (NVJ) across the country.
Recall that Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers state observed and said that PDP candidate almost lost the election. Hear him: “If not for the pressure of journalists who insisted that INEC must continue when they announced the result of 13 Local Governments areas and stopped, the results would have been different”.
However most journalists and members of NVJ
were disappointed as Governor Godwin Obaseki left the journalists stranded for one week in his state despite their efforts to protect his votes.
Some journalists who spoke through telephone conversation said up till now that some journalists who cannot afford their transportation back to their destination are still stranded in Edo state, and describes it as a show of shame on the part of Obaseki!
It was gathered that When the EXCO members of Nigerian Visiting Journalists across the country met governor Godwin Obaseki on Sunday night 20th September 2020, he directed them to the chairman PDP campaign council, Mr Dan Orbih, noting that he had instructed him to mobilize journalists across quarters. When the journalists contacted Hon. Orbih who refused to interface with the journalists but said on phone conversation that Gov. “Obaseki did not give him anything for the journalists”.
Another journalist who spoke to Guidepost news said that Obaseki has disappointed them, as “I talk to you now my brother, no journalist received any stipend for their accommodation and transportation back to their destination. And these are the people that made Obaseki’s winning possible, sacrificed their lives at various polling stations, paid their transportation from the 36 states of the federation to Edo State, paid their hotel bills for one week just to ensure that the election was not rigged but free, fare and credible, to our chagrin, no appreciation was shown to the journalists, he added”.
