A deeply disturbing incident has emerged from Enugu State involving the alleged torture and killing of a young man, Onyinye Nwonyi, over a theft accusation that has now been proven to be false.
According to available information, Onyinye was at a bar with his friend, Anayo, when the bar owner accused him of stealing her button phone.
Rather than reporting the matter to the police, the woman allegedly invited local forest guards.
What followed was tragic and inhumane.
Onyinye was reportedly taken to a private location believed to belong to one of the guards, where he was tied to a bench and subjected to severe beating.
He did not survive the assault.
In a shocking twist, the phone at the center of the accusation was later found in the possession of the same woman, who had reportedly misplaced it in her shop.
An innocent man has lost his life over a wrongful accusation.
The police have since arrested two forest guards identified as Equity and Moses, along with the bar owner. Investigations are currently ongoing.
⚖️ This incident represents a grave violation of human rights and raises serious concerns about jungle justice and abuse of power.
We call for:
Immediate and transparent investigation
Swift prosecution of all individuals found culpable
Justice for Onyinye and his grieving family
No individual should be subjected to torture or death over an unverified claim. Justice must not only be done but be seen to be done.

Abakaliki, Nigeria — The Ebonyi State Government has taken a significant step toward strengthening market operations and improving the business environment, as the Commissioner for Market Development and Parks, Prof. Nwogo Ajuka Obasi, convened a strategic meeting with traders and park chairmen from all 13 local government areas of the state.
The meeting, held on April 1, 2026, brought together the ministry’s management team alongside the Board Chairman of Market Development and Parks and his team. The engagement focused on assessing ongoing activities in markets and motor parks, reviewing the role of government, and gathering feedback from stakeholders on how to enhance ease of doing business across the state.
Traders and their executives, who attended in large numbers, expressed appreciation to the commissioner for what they described as an inclusive initiative. Many noted that it was the first time such a consultative forum had been organized, giving them a direct platform to present their challenges and expectations.
During the deliberations, participants highlighted key operational concerns and proposed solutions aimed at improving efficiency, infrastructure, and regulatory support within markets and parks. The stakeholders also commended the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, for fostering what they described as an enabling environment for business growth under his “People’s Charter of Needs” agenda.
In a show of appreciation, the traders collectively announced plans to present a package in honour of the governor, citing his people-oriented leadership and commitment to economic development.
Speaking after the meeting, Prof. Obasi described the engagement as productive and assured stakeholders of the government’s commitment to addressing their concerns.
“This meeting has been fruitful. We have carefully noted the areas of concern, and as a government, we will address the issues presented in a timely manner,” he said.
The meeting concluded with the adoption of resolutions reached during the deliberations. A motion for adoption was moved by Hon. Nwode and seconded by Hon. Linus Obaji, Chairman of the Abakaliki Rice Mill, signaling a unified commitment to advancing market and park development across Ebonyi State.

The Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Nweze Umahi, CON, has called on leaders across the South East to move beyond passive support and become vocal advocates of the achievements of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Umahi made the appeal during the commissioning of the first phase of the Enugu–Anambra Expressway, where he stressed that acknowledging government progress is not enough. According to him, leaders must take deliberate responsibility in communicating these developments to the people.
While inaugurating the 15-kilometre stretch of the road, constructed with concrete pavement, the minister assured that the project has a lifespan of up to 100 years. He added that the timing of the commissioning was strategic, aimed at ensuring smooth and safe travel for citizens returning home for the Easter celebrations, thereby reducing the risk of accidents.
The minister noted that the South East is currently experiencing a level of inclusion at the national level that has long been sought. He highlighted the appointment of two service chiefs from the region, key ministerial positions, and ongoing federal road projects as indicators of renewed recognition and integration.
Umahi acknowledged that while the region’s aspirations may not yet be fully realized, there is clear and measurable progress that deserves recognition and amplification. He described the current period as a significant turning point and urged leaders to actively engage their communities with these developments.
He concluded by emphasizing the need for collective responsibility, encouraging South East stakeholders not only to support the administration but to reciprocate by translating the perceived progress into political backing ahead of the 2027 general elections.

News Report: A communiqué issued by Bishop Alpha Ikpeama, the Director General of the United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide, has called on Igbos to refrain from criticizing the efforts of David Umahi, describing him as a dedicated leader contributing significantly to rebuilding the nation.
In the statement, Bishop Ikpeama cautioned against what he described as attempts by “enemies of the Igbo Nation” to undermine Umahi’s achievements, urging the people to remain united and supportive of progressive leadership.
He highlighted Umahi’s tenure as Governor of Ebonyi State, noting that he left behind notable infrastructural and developmental milestones. Bishop Ikpeama also praised his current role as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, stating that he has continued to demonstrate commitment by laying down strategic innovative blueprints for national development.
The communiqué further addressed the popular notion that the “Igbos have no king or central leadership”, as falsehood replaced by “onye supuru Eze, Eze eruya aka”, (he who honours the king will be king) warning that internal division and undue criticism could reinforce such perceptions. He stressed the importance of unity among Igbos, emphasizing that collective support is vital for both regional advancement and national cohesion.
He concluded by urging Igbos to rally behind leaders working for the progress and unity of the nation, noting that unity remains a key driver of sustainable development.

Ebonyi, March 19, 2026 — The (AEFUTH), Abakaliki, has unveiled a newly renovated state-of-the-art paediatric operating theatre, a development set to significantly improve surgical care for children across Ebonyi State.
The facility was upgraded through a strategic partnership between global charities and (KidsOR), reinforcing ongoing efforts to expand access to safe and timely surgical care for children in low- and middle-income countries.
Globally, an estimated 85 percent of children will require surgical care before the age of 15. However, more than one billion children still lack access to safe, affordable, and timely surgical and anaesthesia services. The newly equipped paediatric theatre at AEFUTH is expected to bridge part of this gap, providing specialized care tailored to young patients and improving outcomes for both elective and emergency procedures.
Speaking at the unveiling, Smile Train Program Assistant, Adaeze Muonyelu, emphasized that the initiative will enhance surgical capacity at AEFUTH, reduce delays in critical procedures, and ultimately lower morbidity and mortality rates among children.
“The provision of a dedicated paediatric theatre is highly commendable, particularly in Ebonyi where existing facilities are insufficient for the growing population. This intervention will elevate the quality of care and expand access to life-saving surgical services for children,” she said.
Also speaking, KidsOR Managing Director, David Cunningham, highlighted the role of innovation and technology in advancing surgical care in underserved regions.
“Our collaboration with Smile Train continues to deliver impactful solutions by equipping hospitals with modern surgical infrastructure. A dedicated children’s theatre such as this will help secure a healthier future for vulnerable children,” he noted.
AEFUTH, which serves a population of over 4.4 million people in Ebonyi State, currently has a 72-bed paediatric capacity and has treated more than 100 cleft patients since 2014. The hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Professor Robinson Chukwudi Onoh, expressed optimism that the new facility will boost surgical performance and improve staff morale.
“With this world-class equipment, our teams are more motivated, and we expect a significant increase in the number of children receiving surgical care,” he stated.
The AEFUTH project marks the eighth paediatric operating theatre delivered in Nigeria under the Smile Train–KidsOR partnership. Since 2020, the collaboration has renovated 31 paediatric operating rooms across 21 African countries, while also supporting surgical training through partnerships with the (WACS) and the .
In addition, the initiative has introduced solar-powered surgical systems in 77 facilities across Africa, addressing power supply challenges while promoting environmentally sustainable healthcare delivery.
Together, Smile Train and KidsOR continue to strengthen healthcare systems and extend life-saving surgical services to children in underserved communities, ensuring that no child is left behind in accessing quality medical care.

AEFUTH is the eighth operating room that has been renovated by the Smile Train-KidsOR partnership in Nigeria. Smile Train is focused on strengthening public health systems through our sustainable partnership model.
