AFRICAN LITERACY DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE (ALDI) Seeks Strategic Support from UNESCO, Corporate Bodies, Industry Leaders, Donor Agencies, African Leaders and Government Partners

Mission
To promote a sustainable reading culture and enhance literacy standards in African schools.

Vision
To standardize education and position Africa as the most literate continent in the world.

Introduction
The African Literacy Development Initiative (ALDI) is a non-governmental organization established to promote and instill a strong reading and writing culture in schools across Africa. The initiative is driven by the need to improve literacy levels and address the steady decline in the quality of education on the continent.

A vibrant reading culture is fundamental to improving literacy, critical thinking, and intellectual capacity among students. Reading remains a cornerstone of academic excellence, personal growth, and career advancement. Unfortunately, many African schools lack adequate resources, orientation, and institutional support to effectively nurture reading and writing habits among learners.

Since its inception, ALDI has conducted extensive studies on the African education system. While modest improvements have been recorded over time, but recent assessments reveal a disturbing decline in academic engagement. Many graduates struggle to competently defend their disciplines, a development that diminishes the value of academic qualifications and risks portraying Africa as educationally underprepared in a competitive global environment. This challenge inspired ALDI to develop a comprehensive study guide aimed at reversing this trend and advancing educational standardization in line with global best practices.

Programme Overview
Through its flagship educational reform programme titled “Promoting a Reading Culture in Africa”, with the subtitle “A Practical Guide to Memory Improvement and How to Improve Your Performance at School”, ALDI provides a timely and practical study guide designed to address the root causes of reading apathy—one of the major contributors to students’ poor academic performance across the continent.

To further advance this objective, ALDI launched the Illiteracy Eradication Project, encapsulated in a booklet titled “Promoting Reading for Literacy Advancement.” The study guide is targeted at secondary and tertiary institutions across Africa, equipping students with the skills required to improve academic competence and prepare for global competitiveness.

Authored by Prince Solomon Eddie-Johns Okorie, the guide emphasizes intentional reading as a discipline, enabling students to transform information into deep understanding and practical knowledge.

The book is scheduled for free distribution to secondary and tertiary institutions across Africa. ALDI believes that its wide circulation will help reposition students on the path of academic excellence, which remains the bedrock of quality education. Indeed, today’s readers are tomorrow’s leaders.

The initiative is expected to make a significant and lasting impact on Africa’s educational landscape, with projected coverage from affiliate media organizations worldwide.

Scheme of Activities

1. Expansion of outreach to schools and students across Africa.

2. Provision of essential learning tools and educational resources.

3. Donation of study guide copies to students and school libraries.

4. Organization of literacy seminars and advocacy programmes.

5. Establishment of reading and writing clubs and competitions.

6. Introduction of reading incentives within African schools.

These interventions are designed to make reading an engaging, rewarding, and lifelong habit for learners.

Promoting a reading culture is a transformative educational investment and a practical demonstration of commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainable development in Africa.

Conclusion
Embedding a strong reading culture within Africa’s educational system is a long-term and strategic investment that requires the collaboration and support of UNESCO, corporate organizations, industry leaders, donor agencies, African Leaders, and government partners.

The ALDI study guide has received widespread commendation, endorsements, recommendations, and forewords from scholars, educational consultants, and professionals across the globe.

Okporojo Killings: Ebonyi Diaspora Commends Nwifuru’s Swift Intervention, Calls for Dialogue and Justice

By Prince Solomon Okorie

The Ebonyi State Union in the United Kingdom and Ireland (ESU UK & Ireland) has commended the Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, for his prompt, decisive, and courageous intervention following the recent communal clashes in Okporojo, Oso Edda in Edda Local Government Area, and Ndukwe Amasiri in Afikpo Local Government Area.

The union noted that the governor’s swift deployment of security measures, including the imposition of a curfew, helped to restore calm in the affected areas and prevented further escalation of violence, loss of innocent lives, and a wider breakdown of law and order at a time when tensions were high.

In a statement jointly signed by its leadership, ESU UK & Ireland expressed deep concern over the negative impact of the crisis and called for sustained dialogue as the most effective pathway to lasting peace.

> “We, the members of Ebonyi State Union United Kingdom and Ireland, write with deep concern following reports of the unfortunate communal disturbances between the people of Amasiri and Okporojo, Oso Edda,” the statement read.

The union said it received news of the violence with sadness and dismay, particularly through distressing images and reports circulated on social and mainstream media, describing the development as painful given the long-standing historical, cultural, and familial ties between the two communities.

According to the statement, Amasiri and Okporojo share common ancestral lineages, matrilineal bonds, inter-marriages, and kinship networks, making the conflict deeply distressing to Ebonyi indigenes both at home and in the diaspora.

> “The loss of lives and destruction of property among people bound by blood and shared heritage is deeply painful,” the union stated.

ESU UK & Ireland specifically commended Governor Nwifuru for what it described as responsible leadership.

> “Your Excellency, we sincerely commend your prompt, decisive, and courageous intervention in restoring calm to the affected areas. The swift deployment of security measures, including the imposition of a curfew, undoubtedly prevented further escalation of violence and loss of innocent lives,” the statement added.

The diaspora body also acknowledged the governor’s track record in resolving long-standing communal conflicts in the state, including the Effium/Ezza and Isi Nkwo/Abaomege crises, describing him as a unifier and bridge-builder who prioritises human lives.

While appealing for continued government intervention to ensure reconciliation and unity between Amasiri and Okporojo, the union stressed that dialogue, negotiation, and inclusive engagement remain critical to ending the cycle of violence permanently.

In a show of solidarity with the affected communities, ESU UK & Ireland announced its resolution to provide ₦2 million in humanitarian assistance to both Amasiri and Okporojo communities to alleviate the hardship faced by families during the crisis.

The union also disclosed that a minute of silence was observed at its most recent general meeting in honour of those who lost their lives in the conflict, while extending heartfelt condolences to bereaved families.

Furthermore, ESU UK & Ireland appealed to the state government to ensure justice by identifying and prosecuting the perpetrators of the violence, noting that justice is a key pillar for sustainable peace.

The statement reaffirmed the union’s confidence in Governor Nwifuru’s leadership and pledged continued support for his administration, while encouraging Ebonyi people everywhere to embrace dialogue over conflict, stressing that peace remains the only path to progress.

The statement was signed by Osuu Chief Otu Chukwu-Etu, President General; Dr. Francis Ama Kalu, Secretary General; Dr. Akanu Obasi, Vice President; and several past presidents of the union.

AFRICAN LITERACY DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE (ALDI) SEEKING FACILITATORS & SPONSORSHIPS

Our Mission: To promote a reading culture and improve literacy in African schools.

Our Vision: To standardize education and make Africa a most literate continent.

Introduction: African Literacy Development Initiative (ALDI). Is a non-governmental organization founded to promote and inculcate a reading and writing culture across African schools. In order to improve literacy level and strengthen the decaying educational system on the continent.

Promoting a reading culture is an essential initiative for improving literacy standards and critical thinking ability among students. Incessant reading is crucial for; academic success, personal development, and career opportunities. Hence, many schools in Africa lack the orientation, resources, and support-base to nurture a reading and writing culture among students.

Overtime, we have understudied the African continental educational system since the inception of ALDI and noticed some remarkable improvements made in the past.

But in the recent times, we have also noticed reader’s apathy and sudden decline in educational activities and the inability of average African students to defend their course after graduation, a precarious situation that invalidates the certificate they obtain after years of onerous study, thereby categorizing Africa as educationally backward continent. This has propelled us to design a study guide book conceptualized to consolidate the quest for innovate and standardize education in Africa. in order to compete with the global standard of education.

This organization, through its educational reform program titled “Promoting A Reading Culture in Africa” with subtitles Practical Guide to Memory Improvement and How to Improve Your Performance at School.”. This timely study guide book keenly addresses the challenges militating against readers’ apathy, which is the bane of poor performances in African schools.

To address these challenges, we have initiated this illiteracy eradication project in booklet format, titled: “Promoting Reading For Literacy Advancement”

This study guide book is designed to promote and inculcate a reading culture in secondary and tertiary institutions in African schools. And to improve student’s competence, enhance their performance at schools and equip them for global success.

If students apply the principles which the Author (Prince Solomon Eddie-Johns Okorie) outlined in this book, reading will become their intentional habit and knowledge will grow into understanding.

The book is intended to be distributed free of charge to secondary and tertiary institutions across the continent of Africa. And we believe that if this book is circulated across African schools, it will inevitably prepare the students for academic excellence, which is the bedrock of education. Since today’s readers are leaders of tomorrow.

This project will make meaningful impacts on the educational landscape in Africa, as often reported by affiliate media outlets across the globe.

Our Scheme of Activities:
1) To reach out to more schools and more students across Africa,
2) providing them with learning tools,
3) donating copies of study-guide books to students and to school libraries,
4) organizing seminars on the importance of reading to improve literacy,
5) setting up reading and writing competition clubs,
6) and providing reading incentives in the African schools.

These will make reading an exciting habit.

Promoting reading Culture means revolutionizing education and improving literacy in Africa, this is a true demonstration of our commitment to corporate social responsibilities.

Conclusion:
Promoting a reading culture in the African school system is a vital endeavour and a lifetime investment that requires organizations such as UNESCO, corporate bodies, Captains of Industries and government’s support and partnership.

The Study guidebook has received wide commendations, recommendations, endorsements and forewords by scholars, educational experts and consultants across the globe

Renowned Media House Set To Honor EEDC Amid Calls for Probe into PHCN, Others Over Nigeria’s Power Failures

By Eddie-Johns – Port Harcourt

Nigeria— In a move that highlights the complex paradox of Nigeria’s energy sector, renowned media firm *Guidepost News International* has announced rollout plans to honor the *Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC)* with an award of efficiency, while simultaneously calling for a high-level Government probe into the systemic failures of the nation’s power holding and distribution Company.

The dual-track approach by the media house underscores a strategy of “praise where deserved, but accountability for the collective,” as it navigates the thin line between recognizing regional improvements and addressing a national energy crisis.

Recognizing Regional Performance: The *EEDC Award*
Guidepost International is set to recognize *EEDC* as the *”Best Electricity Service Provider”* within its operational zone. The media house justifies this recognition based on:
*Improved Response Times:* Noted: Improved service delivery – a near 24 hours of power supply within their jurisdictions, enhancements in addressing localized faults within the South-East.

*Metering Milestones:* Efforts to close the metering gap through various consumer-focused initiatives.
Revenue Transparency: Adopting digital payment systems that reduce billing disputes for consumers.

Despite the broader national challenges, the media house argues that regional actors showing effort toward modernization deserve encouragement to sustain their momentum.

*The Call for Accountability: A National Probe*
In a sharp contrast, the same media organization has issued a formal appeal to the *Federal Government of Nigeria* to launch a comprehensive probe into the *Power Holding Company* structures and the wider value chain of electricity distribution.

Guidepost International is demanding an investigation into:
*”Persistent National Grid Collapses:* The frequent “blackouts” that have paralyzed industrial hubs and small businesses across the country, in states under the services of Holding Distribution Company (PHCN). The worst encounter we have ever witnessed is Rivers State, During our investigation a number of residents were interviewed and their is the same that: according to Prof.  Harcourt Johnson a resident in one of the estates in *Rumuagholu in Obi-Akpo*  Local Government of Rivers State, “I support that motion by Guidepost News international that PHCN should probed inefficiency, fraudulent activity in the power sector, in Port Harcourt here, a situation where are billed astronomical amount every month for those on postpaid metres and we paid without seeing the light you paid for, and it the same with those using prepaid meter, please tell, is it not fraud?” He asked.

*Underinvestment of Intervention Funds:* A probe into how billions of Naira in federal interventions have been utilized by stakeholders in the power sector.
*Systemic Distribution Failures:* Why many parts of the country remain in total darkness despite claims of increased generation capacity.

*A “Sticks and Carrots” Approach*
Explaining this dual stance, spokespersons for the media house stated that the award to EEDC is a “carrot” to incentivize regional excellence, while the call for a probe is the “stick” needed to correct the deep-seated rot at the federal level.

“We must reward those making progress in their specific corridors, like EEDC, but we cannot remain silent while the national power architecture remains a hands of power marauder and and energy distribution companies without integrity. The Nigerian government must hold the entire power value chain accountable for the darkness that still haunts our streets,” the statement read.
