The Ebonyi state government, through the ministry of capital city and urban development, has waded into a rift between the members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) over the relocation of illegal parks.

It would be recalled that the ministry had earlier placed a ban on the activities of individuals, including members of the RTEAN, involved in the loading of passengers at unauthorised designations and directed them to relocate to a government-approved park.

This, however, did not go well with the members of the NURTW, who were in charge of some of the parks within the capital city, including the popular Ishieke Park, which led to a physical altercation between the two groups, resulting in the involvement of the police to cause more crisis instead of restoring order.

In his bid to restore peace and ensure compliance with the government’s directives, the state commissioner for capital city and urban development, Hon. Sunday Inyima, who assembled the two groups in his office to chart a way towards peaceful resolution, expressed confidence that it would be amicably resolved. His efforts to restore peace was grossly undermined as the police CSP John Nwede, the government House CSO ordered for the arrest of RTEAN chairman immediately after the peace meeting in the presence of the state Commissioner for Capital city and urban development.

“We just finished a meeting with the critical stakeholders of transport sectors within the state, and I want to state that there was no protest; what we had was a small rift which has been handled, and the government came out decisively to ban all illegal parks for so many reasons.

“The good thing is the three arms of the transport sectors have truly abided by these directives. What is just happening is a little skirmish, which we actually started resolving, and very shortly, we will resolve it. Everybody has agreed with the existing directives while we proffer solutions,” he said.

The commissioner, who equally dismissed the assumptions that drivers are not allowed to drop passengers at the various bus stops within the capital city as misleading, enlightened that the government only recommended a pick-and-drop process and not to serve as a regular loading spot.

Comrade Prince Igwe, who’s the RTEAN chairman in the state, however, lamented that his members have been refused the right to work in the state, alleging a conspiracy by some individuals who ensured that his written letters to the governor’s office were not delivered, resulting in his quest for a peaceful protest which led to his arrest, allegedly sponsored by one CSP John Nwede, the chief security officer of the government house who presumably operated beyond his jurisdiction in civil matter and threatening further arrest, he boasted that he is an Izzi man, that they opened the government in a matter which the state government is already handling, describing his actions as unlawful, illegal and likely to breach peace if not called to order.

“There’s no way an affiliate of a trade union, and a union being established by the Federal Government of Nigeria and enshrined in the 1999 Constitution as amended, should not be allowed to exist in Ebonyi State or allowed to operate within the government designated park.

“There’s a letter these people have been parading themselves with that the state government said we should not access the government open park, and I don’t really understand the meaning of ‘open park’, and that has been the problem. After the recent agreement that all the illegal parks should be shut down, RTEAN agreed.

“We support the policy of the government and good governance, and all the illegal parks have been provided a place to go, but when my people went to Ishieke Park, they were attacked and detained by security agencies, and even when I went there to know why, they also said they were ordered to detain me by CSP John Nwede.” He said.

However, he further called for a harmonious working atmosphere among transport operators in the state to enable the sector to move forward above monopoly.

Meanwhile, the state chairman of the NURTW, Mr chukwuemeka noted the peace initiative of the state government had begun, saying that agreements have not yet been reached but expressed hope for peaceful resolution.

The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally, declaring that his continued detention violates both Nigerian and international court rulings.

Arrest and Ordeal

In a statement signed by its Director-General, Justice Alpha Ikpeama, UNIEC said Kanu’s continued detention despite court rulings in his favour poses serious danger to his health and to Nigeria’s unity.

Kanu’s troubles began in October 2015, when he was arrested in Lagos by the DSS and charged with treason, terrorism, and managing an unlawful society. Though granted bail in 2017, his home in Afaraukwu, Umuahia, was invaded by soldiers, leaving 28 IPOB members dead. Kanu escaped and returned to the UK.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a prisoner of conscience, not a terrorist.”

Extraordinary Rendition

In June 2021, he was abducted in Kenya, tortured for eight days, and illegally renditioned to Nigeria, where he has been held in DSS solitary confinement ever since.

Courts across the world have ruled against his detention:

UN Human Rights Group (2022) declared his rendition illegal under 16 conventions.

Court of Appeal, Abuja (2022) discharged all charges.

Federal High Court, Umuahia (2022) ruled his rendition unconstitutional.

High Court of Kenya (2025) awarded him damages for illegal abduction.

“There is no legal basis to detain or try him any further.”



Health at Risk

On September 17, 2025, Kanu’s lawyers revealed he is battling dangerously low potassium levels and other complications that could trigger heart failure.

UNIEC expressed dismay that while the Buhari administration openly targeted Ndigbo, Tinubu has allowed Kanu’s ordeal to continue.

“Unity must not only be in theory, it must reflect in practice.”

Double Standards

UNIEC accused the government of double standards, noting that dialogue and amnesty have been extended to terrorists, while Kanu remains behind bars.

They also pointed out that other agitators like Chief Sunday Igboho and Sheikh El-Zakzaky are free, asking why Kanu’s case is different.

“Today it is Mazi Nnamdi Kanu; tomorrow it could be any one of us. Injustice to one is injustice to all.”

Call to Action

UNIEC urged OHANAEZE Ndigbo, governors, traditional rulers, the church, youth, and civil society to rise in unison and demand Kanu’s release.

“If Igbo people are no longer considered part of ‘one Nigeria,’ then they should be allowed to go in peace.”

The Ebonyi state government on Thursday declared the 2025 Southeast Traditional Rulers Council meeting officially opened in Abakaliki, the state capital, for a two-day conversation within the traditional institutions.

The event, which is a gathering of custodians of the people’s tradition across the six southeastern states in Nigeria, also raised concerns on the need for cultural renaissance, peace building and improved security in the region.

Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru said it was more than a gathering of mere mortals but of the ancestral spirits of the southeast, embodied in the living custodians of the Igbo heritage, and pledged to keep upholding cultural values.

“When I assumed office as governor, I made a covenant with God and with our people to restore dignity where it has been lost, rebuild confidence where it has been eroded, and enthrone justice.” Said.

Represented by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Moses Odunwa, Governor Nwifuru reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restore traditional values by ensuring that the welfare of traditional rulers in the state is well taken care of.

He disclosed that before now, his administration had distributed vehicles, constructed a 2 km road leading to their palaces, increased their allowances, and waspalaces for them.

The gesture, according to him, has helped them navigate through to ensure peaceful coexistence within their domains as well as led to the improved security in the state, saying their role in grassroots engagement and community policing traditionally is worth government attention.

Speaking on raising insecurity in the region, His Royal Majesty, Eze Dr EC Keke, who’s the chairman of the traditional rulers council in Imo state and doubles as the chairman of the southeast traditional rulers council, described the essence of the gathering as an avenue to chart a common course in ensuring the peace and security of the people while preserving tradition.

“We are the security officers of our various communities, and we have been trying to see that we control insecurity in our various communities, and with the way we have been handling it, things are gradually calming down. We have our vigilantes, which have been existing before we came, and very soon, everything will be a thing of the past.” He said.

The State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Igwe Stephen Uchenna, has charged the traditional rulers to demonstrate their leadership qualities by upholding cultural heritage and uniting the Igbo across the southeast.

“I charged them to live in peace, to bring people together and resolve conflicts to bring lasting peace in their communities and ensure that every community in Igbo land is one, not segregating ourselves.

“All Igbos are one, and it’s time that the Federal government know that traditional rulers are an institution that should be enshrined in the Constitution, and they should be charged with those responsibilities.” Igwe said.

Lending his voice, the state commissioner for justice, Associate Prof. Bernard Odo, sees the gathering as a means of reviving the Igbo tradition and creating an awakening among the Igbo people of southeast Nigeria.

“It’s a revival of our lost culture. One striking thing in this opening ceremony is that for the first time in the gathering of this magnitude, the language of the proceedings is the Igbo language, unlike previous gatherings where Igbo traditional rulers gathered and adopted a foreign language for proceedings.

“The extinction of our tradition is gradually being restored, and I’m sure for the custodians of our culture in the five states that make up southeast Nigeria to gather here to brainstorm on the restoration of our culture is a welcome development.” He said.

The Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency Governor Peter Ndubisi Mbah, has graciously approved a request by the United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide to host the organization’s annual event, The Great Igbo Achievers Legacy Day, in Enugu. The event, designed to celebrate distinguished Igbo sons and daughters who have made significant contributions to the development of the Igbo nation, will hold on a date and venue to be announced soon.

In addition, Governor Mbah has approved the release of his achievements profile to be documented in the Great Igbo Achievers Book of Records—a compendium that highlights the roles and legacy achievements of notable Igbo leaders, both past and present. The Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency Governor Peter Ndubisi Mbah, has graciously approved a request by the United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide to host the organization’s annual event, The Great Igbo Achievers Legacy Day, in Enugu. The event, designed to celebrate distinguished Igbo sons and daughters who have made significant contributions to the development of the Igbo nation, will hold on a date and venue to be announced soon.

In addition, Governor Mbah has approved the release of his achievements profile to be documented in the Great Igbo Achievers Book of Records—a compendium that highlights the roles and legacy achievements of notable Igbo leaders, both past and present.
