Ebonyi Set for Rubber Industry Revival as NARPPMAN Launches State Chapter

By Prince-Solomon – Guidepost News International

In a landmark move to restore its agricultural heritage, Ebonyi State has inaugurated its chapter of the National Rubber Producers, Processors, and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NARPPMAN). The event, held at the Staff Development Centre, Kpirikpiri, Abakaliki, marked a crucial step toward revitalising the state’s rubber industry and unlocking new economic opportunities.

Representing the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Princess Nkachinyere Iyioku, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Fidelis Nwankwo, delivered a powerful message on behalf of the state government. He reaffirmed Governor Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s commitment to agricultural revival, pledging land and infrastructure support for rubber cultivation.

“The governor is here to tell us he is with us,” Nwankwo stated, stressing the readiness of the government to back the initiative with necessary resources.

He further noted the state’s historic ties to rubber production and its potential to surpass other major rubber-producing regions in Nigeria.

NARPPMAN National President, Prince Igbinosun Idowu Peter, hailed the inauguration as a turning point for Ebonyi’s economic future.

“We are very hopeful that in no distant time, Ebonyi State will restart rubber production and fully integrate into national and global value chains,” he said.

Prince Peter explained that rubber trees take about seven years to mature, after which they can yield daily returns for up to 30 years. He revealed plans to establish a budwood garden and nursery, offering quality planting materials and technical support—contingent on the state government’s provision of land and other resources.

Dr. Stephen Odoh, Director General of EBSMEDA and Chairman of the occasion, emphasized the importance of value addition through local processing and marketing.

“It’s a great development that the association is not only focused on production but also on processing and marketing,” Odoh noted, reiterating the state’s full support.

Newly inaugurated NARPPMAN Ebonyi State Chairman, Jonathan Azu Udu, assured attendees of the association’s dedication to contributing to the state’s economic growth. He urged farmers to embrace rubber cultivation, describing it as a rewarding and sustainable investment.

Royal father, HRH Ezeogo Charles Azuanya, the Owuu XII of Ebunwana Edda Autonomous Community, gave his royal blessings and pledged to donate land for the project.

Chief Mrs. Ugo Nachi commended the state government for enabling the initiative and recalled her community’s legacy in rubber farming, stressing its potential to drive income generation and community development.

The event featured goodwill messages from various stakeholders. Evang. Ugochukwu Iteshi, representing Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, pledged legislative support, while Hon. Comr. Okeh Furtuna promised her personal commitment to the project.

With strong support from government, traditional institutions, and the farming community, the inauguration of NARPPMAN in Ebonyi State marks a pivotal step toward transforming the state into a key player in Nigeria’s rubber industry.

The governor lauded Ebonyi women for their solidarity and contributions to his administration, promising greater inclusion of women in governance.

In her remarks, the First Lady, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, encouraged women to harness their full potential in driving transformation.

She further emphasized that helping the vulnerable, promoting honesty, standing against injustice, and raising disciplined children are all part of the broader mission of inspiring change.

EBONYI EXCO APPROVES EDUCATION TRUST FUND, MOVES TO REFORM REVENUE SERVICE

By Prince-Solomon Okorie

The Ebonyi State Executive Council (EXCO) has approved a series of strategic decisions aimed at enhancing education, boosting internally generated revenue, strengthening security, and improving governance across the state.

These resolutions were announced in Abakaliki, the state capital, during a press briefing by the Honourable Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Hon. Barr. Ikeuwa Omebeh. The briefing followed the EXCO meeting held on Thursday, 4th September 2025, at the New Government House EXCO Chambers, presided over by Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.

According to the Commissioner, EXCO approved the transmission of an Executive Bill to the Ebonyi State House of Assembly for the establishment of the Ebonyi State Education Development Trust Fund. The initiative is aimed at mobilizing both public and private sector resources to strengthen basic education across the state.

The fund, to be managed by a legally constituted board to ensure transparency and accountability, will support key areas including classroom rehabilitation, ICT integration, teacher training, scholarship programs, school feeding initiatives, and enhanced security in public schools.

In a related development, EXCO also approved a special waiver for the absorption of 33 staff members of the King David Gifted Academy — 25 teaching and 8 non-teaching — into the State Secondary Education Board.

On revenue reform, Hon. Omebeh revealed that EXCO deliberated on the report of the investigative committee on petitions against the Chairman and Secretary of the Ebonyi State Internal Revenue Service. The Council adopted the committee’s recommendations, which include:

  • Comprehensive restructuring of the Revenue Service,
  • A forensic audit of its automation system,
  • Enhanced monitoring of operations, and
  • A strong warning to staff against fraudulent practices.

The Council further directed that all government contracts must undergo due process and transparent bidding. It also mandated that only properly authorized legal practitioners may handle IGR-related prosecutions in the courts.

In the area of youth and sports development, EXCO granted approval for the State Council on Public Procurement to advertise the award of contracts for the construction of the Pool Service Building and Swimming Pool at the Ebonyi State Olympic Sports Centre.

To enhance oversight and accountability, EXCO resolved that all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) must notify the Ministry of Project Monitoring and Evaluation of any projects under their supervision.

Additionally, the Council approved the drafting and submission of an Executive Bill to the House of Assembly to regulate the activities of scrap dealers in the state. The bill will introduce punitive measures to curb malpractices and ensure proper regulation of the trade.

On transportation matters, EXCO summoned the General Manager of Ebonyi Transport Corporation (EBOTRANS), Chief Mrs. Nnenna Igwe, along with the immediate past Acting General Manager and suspended Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Dr. Simon Idenyi. Both officials are expected to submit a comprehensive report on the operations of the corporation for deliberation at the next EXCO meeting.

Concluding the briefing, Hon. Barr. Omebeh emphasized that the Council’s resolutions reflect Governor Nwifuru’s unwavering commitment to strengthening institutions, advancing quality education, and driving sustainable development throughout Ebonyi State.

Senate Deputy Whip Vows to Tackle Illiteracy, Distributes Learning Materials to 6,000 Pupils

By Prince-Solomon Okorie

The Deputy Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, has launched a major educational empowerment initiative in Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone with the distribution of school desks, textbooks, and writing materials aimed at enhancing the quality of education.

The flag-off ceremony, held at the Ohaukwu Local Government Headquarters, featured the official presentation of 2,000 units of 3-in-1 desks designed to accommodate about 6,000 pupils across primary and secondary schools in the zone.

Our correspondent reports that the educational materials distributed include English and Mathematics textbooks, exercise books, pens, and other essential writing supplies.

Speaking during the event, Senator Nwebonyi emphasized that the initiative is part of his commitment to tackling illiteracy and improving the learning environment for students in the region.

“The development of every society depends largely on the quality of education given to our children. Today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders. That’s why I have procured these desks and learning materials to support their educational journey,” he said.

Highlighting his achievements since assuming office, the senator listed the construction of over 16 kilometers of concrete roads across the four LGAs in Ebonyi North, distribution of vehicles, motorcycles, and agricultural processing machines, as well as the award of scholarships to more than 300 students.

He further revealed that work will soon begin on the 12-kilometre Ogudu–Odumoke Road in Ohaukwu LGA, with the first 2 kilometers already awarded to contractors.

“We are determined to set a benchmark that will be difficult—if not impossible—to surpass. As we prepare for the 2025 budget year, more interventions like this will be implemented,” Nwebonyi assured.

Ebonyi State APC Chairman, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, commended Senator Nwebonyi for his outstanding performance, “time has come when if an elected officer did not perform, he will not earn the party ticket for a second tenure”, urge the people to continue to support the APC-led administration.

Senator Nwebonyi thanked his constituents for their trust and pledged not to let them down.

“I will continue to do extraordinary things to the glory of God and for the betterment of my people—the great people of Ebonyi North,” he stated before inviting Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru to cut the symbolic tape.

Hon. Joseph Ununu, member representing Abakaliki South in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, praised the senator’s leadership, declaring:

“Senator Nwebonyi has proven that young people can deliver better legislation and more impactful representation. The older politicians have done their part but it’s time to hand over to a more vibrant generation.”

Similarly, Hon. Prince Odono Ikechukwu Onwe, Chairman of Ohaukwu LGA, applauded the senator’s performance, noting:

“He has built homes for the indigent, distributed farm inputs, shared tricycles, and now this massive educational empowerment program. He has won the hearts of the people and has already qualified himself for reelection in 2027.”

Chief Onyeoma Kelechi-Agbo, National President of the Mgbojiogu Youth Assembly and former President of Proprietors of Private Schools in Ebonyi State, added:

“Senator Nwebonyi has made history in Ebonyi North with his unmatched achievements in such a short time. For the first time, private schools have been included in this kind of program. Investing in the future of our children through education is commendable, and we will support his reelection in 2027 based on merit.”
