33rd Convocation of Uniport: Eze Describes Prof. Owunari as a Trailblazer as VC Ends Sixteen Years of Stifling Career Stagnation that Stunted the Growth of Staff …Says His Achievements within the Space of One Year as VC Rank Uniport Top Amongst Other Universities in Nigeria… Commends the University for the honour done on Apostle Ogu and Dr Nyong

Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and erstwhile National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New People’s Democratic Party (nPDP), Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has commended the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, for placing utmost priority on the welfare, growth and development of staff of the institution in areas considered as fundamental to giving the required boost to their career and giving them worthwhile and enduring workplace experience in their years of active service.

Reacting to the implementation of the modified career structure which has brought to an end many years of stunted growth and career stagnation amongst staff of the institution, Eze said such initiative is well thought-out and will help the university deliver on its mandate in teaching, learning, research, community service and entrepreneurship.

In a statement made available to media houses in Port Harcourt, the party Chief said all of these and more were revealed at the 33rd University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) convocation ceremony for the award of Certificates, Diplomas and Sub-Degrees held 2nd and 3rd December, 2022.

The event which covered the award of First Degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters’ Degrees, Doctorate Degrees, Conferment of Honorary Degrees and Presentation of Prizes was covered the 2019/2020 sessions which were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the eight month nationwide strike embarked upon by labour unions in universities.

The convocation saw over 19,236 students graduating, out of which 9,699 students emerged from postgraduate school. From that figure, about 1,028 are PhDs, 3,745 are Masters Degrees in various disciplines, and about 4,926 are postgraduate diplomas.

Reeling out his achievements while taking stock of the journey so far for UNIPORT under his headship, Prof. Owunari said the career structure he inherited on the assumption of office defectively restrained some staff of the institution from gaining career progression that demoralised those affected.

The Professor of Pharmacology said, “The career structure of this university has been in the backline for more than fifteen, sixteen years. The old structure was such that some staff don’t have where to climb to. They get to a point where they’re stuck, with no career channel to progress on.

“We realised the challenge and said it is not good enough. We ensure that all necessary actions and decisions were taken and the varsity now has a new career structure which has well been approved, stimulating opportunities of growth for staff in various career pacts.”

Among other achievements since taking over in July last year, the UNIPORT VC listed a weekly information update on the varsity, delivery of more infrastructures, a partnership agreement with foreign universities, global partnership on tackling climate change, improved cohesion among management, governing council, senate, staff and students, all of which, he said, has made running the school easier than it could have been.

Worthy of note is the addition of two new faculties to the list programs offered by the university -the faculty of Computing and the faculty of Media and Communication Studies.

It might interest you to know that under his headship as VC, the University of Port Harcourt is ranked 5th best in Nigeria. That would not have been possible without his efforts in rebranding the institution for better result.

On the issue of climate change which poses serious danger to our world, the VC said the university is working with local and international partners to tackle the menace, including flood and other forms of natural disaster ravaging our our planet and particularly, Nigeria.

With all the above feats, Eze quoted the Holy Book of Proverbs 29:2 which states that, “When the godly are in authority, the people rejoice. But when the wicked are in power, they groan”. The fact remains that the appointment of Prof Georgewill Owunari a very righteous man as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt the University has truly changed for the better.

Eze commended Prof. Owunari for the very many feats recorded within the short period he has held sway as VC and tasked him not to relent in his efforts to break new grounds and give the institution a pride of place in comity of varsities in Nigeria and beyond.

This special recognition was done on Dr. Nyong based on the giant strides in the real estate industry and relentless efforts to bridge the housing gap in Nigeria which has made him a force to reckon with respect to real estate and capital management at large.

Accordingly, Nyong has contributed to the delivery of more than 11,000 residential units, the management of more than 2 trillion Naira in assets, and the creation of more than 10,000 jobs all across the nation. He has demonstrated outstanding corporate leadership and has emerged as a formidable example for the coming generation.

Prof. Georgewill also ceased the opportunity to thank Dr. Richard for his valuable contributions to the development of his alma mater.

Eze commended the University for the conferment of “Pillar of Hope to Indigent Students in the university of Port Harcourt Award” on the Apostle of our dispensation, Apostle Eugene Egwuatu Ogu the General Overseer of Abundant Life Evangel Mission Worldwide during the Chancellor’s/ Dinner/Award Night. This is an award well deserved knowing the philanthropic outputs by this great man of God to better the lots of not only the less privileged but any that passes his golden path.

Eze joins the Vice Chancellor to thank the immediate past Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, the TETFund, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state and others whose efforts in diverse contributions are helping to advance the fortunes of the university.

Eze reiterated that Senator Andrew Uchendu the Chairman of the university Council need to be commended and congratulated including the management team for their support in raising the bar of university administration in Nigeria.

In a statement made available to media houses in Port Harcourt, Eze said Governor David Umahi never runs out of architectural ideas and ingenious constructions, noting that his mind is a convergence of engineering wonders of the highest standards yearning for outward expression thereby earning him comfortably the title of Captain of Infrastructural Revolution in Nigeria.

The party stalwart said the latest splash of projects exhibiting the wonders of Gov. Umahi’s architectural prowess is the new Ebonyi lodge in Abuja, which was recently commissioned by the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC),

Describing the structure as a an Engineering masterpiece and brainchild of the Governor, Eze said the beautiful project is just one extract pulled from the immense body of projects dotting the landscape. And just when you think the Governor’s construction engine has lost steam, Umahi springs a surprise, he conjures up another magic that makes you peer in utter bewilderment.

According to Barr Chioma Nweze, the beautiful and brilliant Commissioner for Trade and Investment, “The lodge is the highest heaviest engineering statement ever made in the area. It is a feat like no other which towers intimidatingly, setting a whole new paradigm by any civil engineering or construction description. It is an incredible legacy and a true wonder of the architectural world. Governor Umahi must have deployed all the tools in his engineering kitty to make this a reality”.

This legacy project was rolled out in 2020 and hit completion in 2022. The four storey edifice is fitted with world-class facilities from the ground floor to the 4th floor, including swimming pool and relaxation area, gym house, different sections of launge, Cinema house, suana and changeover rooms, internet facilities, CCTV footage, 24 hours power supply and other eye-catching innovations.

In another development, Eze rejoices with Governor Umahi as the Ebonyi State Government shone like a million stars in an award ceremony packaged by the World Bank and her partners in the country last week.

The award held in Transcorp Hilton, Abuja saw the Governors of Ebonyi State, Edo State, Jigawa state, Sokoto State and Kebbi State in attendance, a former Governor of Ekiti State was also present.

Explaining the awards, Minister of Finance Zainab Ahmed noted that the awards were for fiscal responsibility, transparency in managing public funds and responsible debt management.

The World Bank had designed the State Fiscal Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability (SFTAs) as a support and intervention programme for states to implement a fiscal and sustainability plan. It is the evaluation of the implementation of the SFTAs that led to the awards.

In the Excellence award given to the top 10% among the states, Ebonyi also came tops in the efficiency in Public Expenditure category. The state was also judged very good in Domestic Revenue Mobilization, very good in Debt sustainability and improvement in the overall template of SFTAs.

Receiving the Five awards, an elated Governor Umahi noted that the state had a well thought out Fiscal plan with an appropriate implementation framework that has aided very high budget performances. He stated that the state also made sure the debt repayment plans are followed judiciously thereby achieving a consistent rating of the state as the least indebted in the South east and the fourth least indebted in the country.

In another development, Eze described the conferrement of the Grand Service Star award on Governor Umahi by his Rivers State counterpart, Gov. Nyesom Wike as well deserving if one is to consider Umahi’s investment in Rivers State and most importantly his love to mankind without any discrimination.

Ebonyi people can now raise their heads high anywhere in the world and say they are from the Salt of the Nation, a State that is now a flagship of excellence and reference point in good governance.

Congratulating Umahi and the good people of Ebonyi for the very many feats, Eze called on other Governors to take a clue from Umahi as he continues to break new grounds in governance and service delivery through infrastructural development.

The Nigerian electorate has been charged to look beyond political party lines in their voting for candidates in next year’s general election.

The admonition on the 2023 elections was given by the Christian Association of Nigeria, Ebonyi State chapter.

This was during its one day prayer summit/retreat for all political aspirants in Ebonyi State.

The event took place on Thursday at the Saint Paul’s Catholic Church, Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

Speaking at the event, the guest and Methodist Archbishop, Archdiocese of Enugu, Most Reverend Christopher Ede, charged Christian politicians to approach the forthcoming elections with diligence in order not to ruin the Christian faith by their choices.

He urge the electorate to vote the pictures what they observe and experience on daily basis in mind, which includes: bad economy and governance, kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, killings of innocent Nigerians if they don’t want a repeat of what is going on in the country.

He added that the pictures of all the country reoccurring abnormalities will serve as a guide to their individual consciences, pointing to a conscientious and credible presidential candidate.

Ede lamented prevalent evils going on across quarters in the country, including insecurity, and charged all electorates and political players to act in such a manner as to douse rather than aggravate the tensions.

He further charged all who love the country to look beyond political party loyalty and money- influence and choose by the ballot only credible candidates with track record of performance.

He said: “My people, there is fire on the mountain, may we rise.

“There is evil everywhere.

“If you don’t wake up, before we close our eyes and open it, we may already become strangers in our own land.”

In a lecture titled: “The importance of peace and security in the electioneering process,” the South East Zonal CAN Chairman, Reverend Father Abraham Nwali, charged the candidates and all political actors to be peaceful in their approach to the elections to avoid threatening the peace of the state and the country in general.

Nwali, who is also the Ebonyi State CAN Chairman, strengthened the church’s commitment to praying for the country and her leadership at all times.

In an address, Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State, represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Kenneth Ugbala, pledged his administration’s preparedness to provide level playing field for all political parties in the state to campaign and canvass for votes ahead of the elections.

The Governor appreciated CAN for organising the event, which, he noted, would go a long way in ensuring a hitch-free election in 2023.

While appreciating the flag bearers of the various political parties, who participated in the exercise, Umahi admonished them to play the game of politics with brotherly sense to avoid overheating the polity.

He said: “I want to remind you that we have no other State we can call our own except Ebonyi, so we have to work very hard to protect it.

“We assure you as a Government that we will provide a level playing ground for you all to conduct your activities.”

The retreat featured prayers for the nation, the political parties’ flag bearers and for peaceful conduct of 2023 elections.

The theme of the summit was: “Peaceful and smooth General Elections 2023.”

Governor David Umahi has lauded the Court of Appeal judgement which reversed the March 8 judgment by Justice Inyang Ekwo purpotedly sacking him and his deputy for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Umahi described the judgement by the three-member panel of the appellate court as a sound juridical articulation which reinforces the provisions of the Nation’s Constitution in matters relating to defection.

The Governor’s reaction was contained in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Strategy, Chooks Oko immediately after the judgement in Abuja today Friday, October 28, 2022.

He observed with contentment that the Court of Appeal has by the pronouncement, proven once again, that the Nation’s Judiciary remains the last hope of the common man.

He emphasized that the judgement has further strengthened his avowed commitment to continue offering his best for the State, assuring that no amount of distraction can derail him.

The Governor however, dedicates the latest victory, first, to God, and to all Ebonyians and lovers of justice across the Country.

Governor David Umahi has declared his full backing to the Umuekumenyi people on their adoption of the APC gubernatorial candidate, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru as their preferred candidate for the 2023 governorship polls in Ebonyi State.

Umuekuenyi is a coalition of the people of the Ezza Ezekuna, Izhi Nnodo, Ikwo Noyo, Ngbo-le-Izha, Agba-Ezekeoma, and Ishielu among other Abakaiki-speaking clans in Ebonyi State and beyond.

The brotherly clans are controlling eight local government areas including Abakaliki, Ebonyi, Ezza North, Ezza South, Ikwo, Ishielu and Ohaukwu.

The people also have a significant number of their population occupying different communities in the remaining five council areas in the Southern part of Ebonyi state.
They held at the weekend a 2-million man march in Abakaliki to appreciate Governor David Umahi’s leadership for having thrown its weight behind the principle of power rotation in the state, especially on the gubernatorial position.

Addressing the Umuekumaenyi in Abakaliki, Governor Umahi said he was overwhelmed by their massive turnout and expressed confidence that the APC candidates would be returned victorious at the 2023 polls in the state.
Umahi represented by the State Chairman of the APC, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, said that the 2 million march has shown his party would win the governorship position and stressed, “even the opposition understands and, therefore, nobody will take us to relegation,” come 2023 polls.

On his part, the Majority Leader of Ebonyi State House of Assembly and a member of the Umuekumenyi Youth Assembly, Chief Victor Chukwu described the year 2023 as a payback period for Ebonyi North Senatorial District.
Chukwu who is an illustrious son of the Ezza Nation called on Ebonyians from other zones to give their support to the candidature of Rt Hon Ogbonna Nwifuru, to be the governor of the state, saying that equity demands that Ebonyi North should produce the next Governor of the state.
“I wish to seize this opportunity to appeal to candidates that are not from  Ebonyi North to save us from the crisis. 
“Recall that in 2015, the then-sitting Governor chose somebody who’s an Izzi person but the people rejected him because they knew that it was not their turn. He lost in Abakaliki, Izzi and Ebonyi Local Government Areas even when he was their son but the people did not support him because they knew it was not their turn.
“This was to show integrity and character, we are not going to take such sacrifice for granted now that it’s their turn and that we’ll show this at the booth,” he stressed
Earlier, the President of Umuekumaenyi Youth Assembly, Hon Uche Ali Ega appreciated members of the forum for turning out en mass to show solidarity with the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.

“The success of our road walk has made the pronouncement that in 2023, Umuekumenyi is on the ground and is ready to ensure that what belongs to them is not traded for a party gift.
“We wish to encourage other sister zones, clans and blocs to support Umuekumenyi because Umuekumenyi has supported others willingly not minding our electoral strength, and population because we have always believed in the charter of equity,” he said.

The National Association of Ebonyi State Students, NAESS, Federal Polytechnic Unwana Chapter has commended Governor David Nweze Umahi for his massive infrastructural transformation of the State within seven years of his administration.

The group also commended the Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Chooks Oko, for his professionalism and  resounding innovations which he brought into the Governor’s Media management.

The  Association made the commendation when it paid a courtesy visit on the Governor’s Special Assistant in his office in Abakaliki, Tuesday.

Speaking during the visit, the Association’s President represented by the Student’s Chief Judge, Comrade Onyebuchi Igwe, applauded the Governor for giving  Abakaliki Capital City and environs an unprecedented facelift through enduring social and security infrastructure.

He noted that the Governor’s rural development policies which are manifest in consolidated infrastructures in all the nooks and crannies of the State have placed Ebonyi first in national development rating, and appreciated the Governor’s Media Aide for his strategic and objective presentation of facts.

“The Ebonyi State Government ably led by Engineer David Nweze Umahi has achieved so many things in his administration.

“The Infrastructural development of the State is something we can not be able to quantify because he has done so much.

“He has made Ebonyi State to be reckoned with among the most developed State in the Country.

“This is the type of Leadership we have been envisaging to have in this State and we are praying that after Engineer David Nweze Umahi, the next Governor is going to consolidate on the achievements made so far by our pragmatic and workaholic Governor who has achieved so much in the area of infrastructure, education, human development to mention just a few.”

The group maintained that the Media Aide’s prompt and exceptional approach to emergencies have always helped to douse tensions arising from activities of political detractors of Government.

The Association also informed the State Government of its decision to hold a one million man match soon, in solidarity with the Governor for his unprecedented developmental strides.

“Ever since you were made the SA to the Governor on Media and Strategy, you have transformed so many things in the Media sector.

“The sector in Ebonyi State has actually recorded great improvement that is unprecedented, going by the way you have reorganized the Media apparatus of the State.

Infact, Government programmes and policies have been amplified.”

Responding, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Strategy,  Chooks Oko, thanked the Students for appreciating the modest efforts of the Governor to secure a better future for them.

He charged them to always be good ambassadors of the State by taking their studies seriously.

Oko also admonished them to avoid indulgence in social vices and other antisocial behaviours in order not to dent their future.

“Governor Umahi has been working day and night to make this State better, a lot of people wave it off with their hands but here you are commending those things that you saw that he did, realizing he did it for you and for the future generations.

“I want to enjoin you, remember that you are in the Polytechnic to study; that is the primary reason you are there.

“You must strive to please, give in your best, realizing that  if you are good, you will be impacting very positively on yourself and family, and we will have a better society in our hands.

“So, I want you to take your studies very seriously.”

Highlight of the visit was the presentation of an award of Excellence to the  Governor’s Media Aide by the Association.

The award according to them, was in recognition of Oko’s love and diligence in service which has brought desirable  changes into Ebonyi State government Media platforms.

Sequel to initial viral rumours renting the air, cum a Press Release accredited to one Dr David Ogbonna of HON LINUS OKORIE CARINGHEART FOUNDATION, purporting that Hon Linus Abaa Okorie, a former member of House of Representatives, was ‘abducted/kidnapped’ yesterday (16/10/2022), the Ebonyi State Police Command swung into action and later traced the said Honourable Okorie (who had evaded many Police arrests/invitations), to the head office of the Ebubeagu Security Outfit at the Old Government House.

Police detectives were briefed on why he was arrested which includes; his activities and utterances that incited and provoked the violence that engulfed Onicha LGA which led to suspected IPOB/ESN operatives or unknown gunmen to unleash mayhem in the area, leaving seven (7) persons dead at the end of that fracas. Hence, the case has now been taken over by the Police Command for preliminary investigation.

Secondly, Hon Linus Abaa Okorie was severally invited by the Security and Intelligence Bureau of the Command over a petition dated 23/3/2022, authored by The State’s Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice, alleging that he was spreading fake news against His Excellency, Engr Dave Umahi accusing the Governor of illegally withdrawing #6.7 billion from State Government’s Account to fund the Appeal Court Judgment against his removal from office, etc.

Similar to the above is another series of false allegations against the Government of Ebonyi State and the Police Command in his social media handles.

Honourable Linus Abaa Okorie in his characteristic pompous manner refused vehemently to report to the SIB for a chat. Rather he chose to file fallacious suits against the Police Command.

It is also pertinent to mention that Honourable Linus Abaa Okorie also have a pending case in which he is implicated in a drug-related offence where the suspects purported to be his agents were arrested for Hard drug sales and use at his City Hub Inn, Mile 50, Abakaliki. Case was later transfered to the NDLEA for further necessary actions.

The Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command, CP Aliyu Garba psc(+), therefore makes it categorically clear that Honourable Linus Abaa Okorie was neither abducted nor kidnapped and warns that people should desist from painting pictures of insecurity in the State by propagating unfounded rumours. Ebubeagu is a lawfully established local security outfit by the House of Assembly and Government of Ebonyi State. If the outfit as empowered by the State Law, arrests anybody, it shouldn’t be interpreted as abduction or kidnapping because those terms mean different things. However, it is expected that the outfit after effecting such arrest, should hand over the matter to the Police for further investigation and other necessary actions which has played out in this instance.

In view of the above, Dr David Ogbonna of Hon Linus Okorie CaringHeart Foundation is warned to henceforth know the implication of wrong choice of words when next dishing out information for public consumption otherwise he will face the dire consequences as enshrined in the laws of the land.

The CP further reassures the good people of Ebonyi State that there is no cause for alarm and advises that everyone should go about their lawful businesses without any fear of molestation, please.

At a recent APC secret meeting, some big wigs of the party & Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s men, came to a conclusion that Peter Obi & the Obidient movement has taken over the social media space in Nigeria, & now controls the 2023 election narrative.
A grave mistake they admitted to have made from the unset, and they now regret.
They underrated Peter Obi, & the Obidient movement when it all started, few months ago.

Now all efforts at trying to slow down the group, infiltrate or discredit the movement has proved abortive. They tried to financially induce some of the major players of the Obidient movement, both online & offline, it didn’t work. They tried to discredit the LP presidential candidate, & some major social media influencers, crusading his campaign with propaganda & fake news, no way. The likes of David Hundeyin has given them sleepless night. As he kept exposing them, bursting their lies, & unmasking their fake news blogs. In all, the most troubling, is the continuous one million man march, being successfully organised, with Obidients turning out in numbers.

They are worried over the rising popularity of the Obidient movement, both online & offline.
Especially the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
As he continously draws the international community’s attention, to his direction. which may hinder their rigging plans.
It was unanimously agreed that financial inducements (vote buying) will not work, come 2023. As a huge chunk of the 70% of Nigeria’s voting population who are mostly youths, are not ready to sell their votes come 2023, based on the new orientation of the Obidient movement.

They are also afraid that the use of violence/Thuggery, may backfire. As the Obidient movement has it’s own numbers, that can resist any form of thuggery or violence, sighting examples from the number of turnouts, of their rallies. That could lead to post election national crisis, since vote buying will not work, financial inducement of key Obidient crusaders didn’t work, propaganda didn’t work, fake news didn’t work.

They agreed to use ETHNIC (Igbo) LINKS OF PETER OBI, & HIS OBIDIENT MOVEMENT TO IPOB, SO SECURITY AGENTS CAN GO AFTER HIS KEY FIGURES.

The plan, is to use prominent persons in the society, via electronic, print and social media, to henceforth intensify false accusations of the Obidient movement links with IPOB, and Peter Obi as an IPOB member/ sponsor. They will keep pushing it, until the govt comes in.
Meanwhile, while that is on, they will threaten the lives of Key Obidient figures on social media, who are known, who reside in Nigeria, work or do business in Nigeria. They will go after their family members, threaten them until they backoff from the movement. Threats in all ramifications, including sudden disappearance of key Obidient figures/arrow heads. Their businesses will be threatened, their jobs will be threatened.

That a list is being compiled, after which actions will commence.
They are hoping to use security agents as well.
DSS & the police will go after key Obidient movement figures, linking them with ties to IPOB, on trump up charges, without proof.
Many will be arrested, on terrorism grounds, even without evidence.
Once the information goes round, other key figures will backoff or go into hiding.
They will use EFCC, to go after fund raisers and donors, to the Obidient movement, in the guise of going after terror financing.

A lot of persons will be arrested by the anti graft agency, based on links with IPOB, on terror financing charges.
They want to model, the #EndSARS pattern, by using security agents to silence a legitimate movement of mostly youths, clamoring to take back their country.
